Neighbourhood favourite:

Yonge and Eglinton is not a tourist destination; it just feels like one thanks to its fun and unique vibe. With the Yonge Eglinton Centre and various independent and high-end boutiques all around, this is one of Toronto’s most popular shopping districts.

Local entertainment venues such as Function Bar and the VIP Cineplex Cinemas allow for a night out in style, comfort, or both. Just walking around the neighbourhood offers many beautiful sights, thanks to notable Art Deco buildings like Postal Station K.

Despite the population density and the area’s reputation as a shopping and entertainment district, there are numerous scenic parks and green spaces all around. And with wide-open sports fields, tennis courts, a children’s wading pool, and not one but two outdoor ice rinks in the winter, Eglinton Park can basically be described as the heart of the community.

Smaller parks can provide an escape to nature without the crowds, like you’ll find in Oriole Park and Sherwood Park. And, of course, the legendary Blythwood Ravine Park is nearby, with breathtaking views of a lush forest and a trail running alongside a bubbling creek.

It’s no wonder that Yonge and Eglinton real estate has become a major hotbed for entrepreneurs looking to set up shop in the city! Fortunately for residents, some of the hippest and most exciting boutiques and amenities open their doors here before anywhere else in Toronto.

And needless to say, Yonge and Eglinton restaurants are legendary! Various flavours from around the world await you, including Italian, Japanese, and Mexican, along with several local pubs perfect for sharing a relaxing drink and appetizer with friends after a day at work. If you want to remain on the cutting edge, this area is for you.

History of Yonge-Eglinton

Today, the lifestyle Yonge and Eglinton offers is modern and hip, and residents revel in every convenience imaginable. It’s hard to believe that the area started out as a humble farming village.

The Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, a revolt against the British government, was also organized right here in what is now known as the Battle of Montgomery’s Tavern. Though the tavern itself burned down in the fray, the land has been designated as an official historic site at the intersection of Yonge Street and Montgomery Avenue.

After the battle, the land remained largely rural until the first horse-drawn streetcar opened its first line on Yonge Street in 1861. After that, development was swift and efficient, finally culminating in the exhilarating neighbourhood we know and love today.
