Midtown Toronto is essentially what it would look like if you dropped a scenic and serene haven in the middle of a busy city. It’s peaceful, safe, quiet, and happens to be among the best set of neighbourhoods in Toronto – at least in our opinion!

We often get asked, “Exactly what and where is Midtown, and how does it differ from Downtown and Uptown?” Since it’s one of our favourite places on earth, we can’t wait to tell you all about it.

The Borders of Midtown Toronto

For starters, let’s address the “where.” As the name implies, Midtown falls not to the east or west, but almost directly in the middle of Toronto. Getting any group of people to agree on the official borders is a little like trying to herd cats. Many associate Midtown with the fantastic shopping and dining district at the crossroads of Yonge and Eglinton. Others, particularly nature lovers, think of the Beltline Trail.

However, generally speaking, the area between Oakwood Ave to the west, Sherbourne Street to the east, Lawrence Ave West to the north, and Bloor Street to the south constitutes Midtown. This section of the city contains some of Toronto’s most scenic, family-friendly, and affluent neighbourhoods.

There’s Cedarville, Forest Hill (North and South), Moore Park, Yorkville, and Rosedale, all spectacular and full of beautiful green spaces while being close to the incredible amenities and excitement of Toronto.

Your Neighbours: The People of Midtown Toronto

Next, we come to the most important question of all; who lives in Midtown? The people here form the beating heart of our community. Though Midtown is home to people of all ages and backgrounds, the predominance of high-end real estate typically means most residents are relatively affluent.

You’ll find plenty of executives and dual-income power couples, as well as families who love the scenic and peaceful atmosphere. However, the construction of some newer townhouses and rental apartments has made living here more accessible to anyone who enjoys this outstanding blend of tranquility and convenience.

Nature lovers, shopping aficionados, and entertainment enthusiasts love all that Midtown has to offer, with its prime location within picturesque ravines and some of Toronto’s finest shopping districts.

The History of Midtown

Midtown is part of Old Toronto, which refers to the city boundaries as they existed in 1998. Originally incorporated as the Town of York, Toronto has expanded considerably since its conception back in the early 1800s. Back then, Midtown was the domain of the wealthy, beginning with the construction of stately mansions in the Victorian, Georgian, and Edwardian architectural styles.

With residential construction well underway, commercial development was not far behind, and numerous shops and restaurants opened to serve the local high-end clientele. One of the most historic landmarks in Midtown is the famed Casa Loma, constructed in 1914 by Sir Henry Pellatt. Once the largest private residence in all of Canada, this sprawling castle consists of over 200,000 square feet! Today, it’s one of the top attractions in Toronto, with over 650,000 visitors each year.

Midtown Neighbourhoods

Many of Midtown’s neighbourhoods remain highly sought after by affluent homebuyers in Toronto, particularly Summerhill, Rosedale, Moore Park, and Forest Hill. These exclusive enclaves are practically synonymous with “family-friendly”, thanks to quiet streets, abundant park land, and picturesque landscaping throughout.

Contrary to popular belief, Midtown isn’t just for the wealthy, however. Relatively affordable neighbourhoods such as Oakwood/Vaughan offer lower-cost housing options and a high quality of life and all of the fantastic amenities Toronto has to offer.

Whether young or young at heart, you are sure to enjoy iconic green spaces such as the Beltline Trail, David A. Balfour Park, and the Moore Park Ravine, to name a few. That said, what really makes this a highly desired location among families is the availability of outstanding schools, and Midtown is home to some of Toronto’s best. Whether you prefer the public system or private education, your family will have access to numerous highly-rated options.
