If you plan to buy a house in Toronto, one of the first things you’ll consider is what location is right for you and your family. Each neighbourhood is unique and different – and so are the people who live in them.

Most of our Midtown Toronto real estate agents live right here in the communities we serve, so we are naturally a little partial to this area. Today, we’ll let Midtown battle Toronto East to see which one is better – all in good fun, of course. We’re not biased, but we think you’ll soon agree that Midtown is among the top places to live anywhere in the city.

Where Is Toronto East?

East End Toronto is part of Old Toronto that existed before suburbs like Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough officially became part of the metropolis in 1998. Technically, Yonge Street is what divides Toronto West from Toronto East.

However, according to the locals, “East” refers to the areas of the city that lie east of the Don River. Neighbourhoods such as The Beaches, Leslieville, East Danforth, and Riverdale are all part of Toronto’s East End. There’s a charming village feel to this end of the city, with a trendy art scene and the hustle and bustle of independent shops and eateries.

Plus, the boardwalk along Lake Ontario in The Beaches is simply breathtaking. This area gets busy in the summertime, but a trip to the waterside is always worthwhile in our opinion.

Toronto East real estate is wide and varied, but it does offer some relatively affordable homes for those seeking to get into the market. There are luxurious options, with row houses and semi-detached homes that are often more affordable for first-time buyers or retirees.

Leslieville and Riverdale both feature a growing number of condos and lofts, adding a modern touch to these long-established communities. More affluent buyers might turn to some of Toronto East’s beautiful Victorian and Edwardian homes, many of which are fully renovated and contain multiple stories for spacious living. We do give credit where credit’s due – Toronto East is a nice place to buy a house (just not quite as nice as Midtown!)

What Is Considered Midtown Toronto?

Toronto Midtown unsurprisingly lies in the middle of Old Toronto, north of Downtown and south of Lawrence Avenue. Here, you’ll find some of the most tranquil, scenic, and affluent neighbourhoods in the city.

Midtown Toronto real estate consists primarily of spacious, detached homes in highly sought-after communities such as Yonge-Eglinton, Davisville Village, Forest Hill, Lytton Park, Allenby, and Chaplin Estates

Like Toronto East, Midtown has a range of high-end, upscale estates interspersed with relatively accessible options. However, the mix is reversed. The area is known predominantly for its luxurious homes, with a few condos and townhouses sprinkled throughout.

You can explore nature for hours; the Beltline Trail and Moore Park Ravine are enough to erase all of the stress of living in the city. Other equally breathtaking options include Sherwood Park, the Evergreen Brick Works, and Wychwood Barns Park.

If you really want to disappear into nature, head on over to Crothers Woods in Leaside. This designated Environmentally Significant Area boasts nearly 10 km of hiking and biking trails.

When you’re ready to come back to civilization, plenty of excitement awaits you, starting with exciting entertainment and a host of upscale shopping opportunities. It can be hard to believe that such peaceful tranquility and big-city convenience can co-exist in the same space!

Depending on your neighbourhood, the vibrant shopping district of Yonge & Eglinton could be mere minutes away. Here is your chance to indulge in an endless variety of retail chains, boutique shops, and independent stores. And we haven’t even mentioned the incredible dining scene yet.

We bet you didn’t know that there was a scientifically proven, mathematical calculation for natural-born foodies to pinpoint the ideal destination. That formula is “best restaurants = Midtown Toronto.”

If you have a passion for great food – or anything else that makes life worthwhile – you will love living in Midtown. East End residents might grumble, but you can’t argue with math!
