It’s time for another battle of the neighbourhoods! This is a fun exercise for us here in Toronto, because every single area has so much to offer. It’s not a matter of good versus bad so much as always getting to choose between good, amazing, and spectacular. Today, Midtown Toronto faces off against Downtown.
While we realize that “the best” is always subjective, our hypothesis is that Midtown will once again emerge victorious. Let the challenge begin!

Location, Location
Where is Midtown Toronto compared to Downtown? The downtown core lies just off the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Ontario between Bathurst Street and the Don Valley Parkway. As far as locations go, it’s quite convenient – as long as you don’t mind the noise or the hustle and bustle.
Travel a few minutes north to Midtown, and you’ll feel like you’re in a different world altogether. Quiet residential streets, beautifully lined with trees and greenery, how can this possibly be the same city?

Things to Do in Midtown and Downtown
On paper, it might seem that Downtown Toronto offers the most excitement. It’s true, this is where you’ll find a lot of the theatres, pubs with live music, and other venues that Toronto is so well known for.
But not so fast! Midtown Toronto may be more known for its parks and scenery, but it boasts an equally thriving arts and entertainment scene. Though it doesn’t get the press downtown gets, there are a ton of fun things to do in Midtown Toronto without venturing into the chaos.
- The Artscape Wychwood Barns is one of our most famous art hubs, where you’ll find artist studios, galleries, and a host of fun events.
- Muse Gallery showcases a variety of contemporary art by a range of Canadian artists.
- The Tarragon Theatre is a local gem known for its uniquely Canadian productions.
- The Regent Theatre is a historic cinema that takes you back to the glamour and mystique of the 1920s while showcasing a variety of foreign and independent films. Upcoming renovations are currently underway to transform it into a true, state-of-the-art facility.
When it comes to live music, Midtown is where it’s at, with venues such as the Function Bar and The Rose and Crown featuring great food and even greater performances.
Midtown boasts the best of everything, a bustling entertainment and shopping scene, plus an abundance of breathtaking ravines and hiking trails minus the crowds. In our eyes, it’s the clear winner when it comes to a fun and engaging lifestyle.

Best Restaurants, Midtown Toronto or Downtown?
Once again, Downtown Toronto gets all of the attention for its endless array of popular eateries and pubs.
However, Midtown Toronto restaurants are nothing to scoff at. With local hotspots like MIA Brunch Bar, Boom at Eglinton, Evviva Breakfast and Lunch, Hazel’s Diner and countless others serving up delectable entrees, we contend that you’ll find the best brunch in Midtown Toronto.
When it comes to outstanding restaurants, we may be at a draw with downtown. But did we also mention that Midtown is a short drive or transit ride away? Living here, you can enjoy all of the perks of the entire city. The excitement and amenities of Downtown are convenient whenever you want them. When you’ve had enough of the crowds for one day, you can escape to the peaceful tranquility that is your home in Midtown.
Homes for Sale in Midtown and Downtown Toronto
Downtown neighbourhoods such as The Annex feature glorious Edwardian and Victorian architecture. Many of these homes have been converted into multi-unit dwellings. True to Toronto’s ever-evolving nature, some of them have been reconverted back into single-family homes.
However, for the most part, your options in Downtown Toronto are largely made up of condos and townhouses. The population density means condos and high-rises are your primary options.
While a few detached homes or townhouses may occasionally come available in older neighbourhoods, most new developments tend to be vertical. If you’re a student, young professional, or retiree who wants to experience the constant excitement of urban life, downtown might be the perfect option.
The opposite is true when it comes to Midtown Toronto real estate. Some condos and townhouses are available. However, the housing mix primarily consists of larger homes and expansive lawns, especially in affluent neighbourhoods like Forest Hill, Davisville Village, and Chaplin Estates.
